🎉ARTHUR UPDATE🎉![]()
🐶Our sweet hospice dog, Arthur, wanted to stop in and say hello! Arthur is doing well most days, as you can see here. He gets fed cooked chicken every day, as that is what it seems to help his stomach the most. Arthur came to us from a NC shelter with an inoperable bladder tumor. He is receiving the best care possible from his amazing foster and Dr. Royal. ![]()
❤️We love you, sweet boy! ![]()

🐾 SEEN OR FOUND A STRAY / LOST / LOOSE DOG? PLEASE READ 🐾![]()
➡️ If you spot a dog wandering alone, your first instinct to chase or grab them can make things worse. A scared animal is often in flight mode and running feels safer than stopping.![]()
🚫 Please DON’T ever chase them ![]()
Fear & stress associated with being lost can engage survival / flight mode. When this system is “on” all rational thinking can go out the window - dogs can bold from their own humans approaching. Chasing, or trying to catch a dog in a flight mode significantly increases their fear / stress level and can cause the dog to bolt into traffic, run even further away from original location, or go into hiding. Even a normally friendly dogs can bite when frightened and cornered.![]()
✅ What TO do instead![]()
➡️ Even if this goes against all your natural instincts- slow down. ![]()
➡️Stay put and be calm, turn sideways, and avoid direct staring.![]()
🥩 Use food if you have it (treats, cooked meat, kibble) – gently toss it away from you, then closer.![]()
🗣️ Speak softly in a quiet, but “happy” sounding tone. ![]()
Let the dog choose to approach.![]()
💯Do not put yourself at risk – animals in flight mode can behave unpredictably.![]()
📸 Document the sighting
If the dog can’t be safely contained:![]()
⚡️Take clear photos or short videos![]()
⚡️Note exact location, time, and direction of travel. Many social media posts about a spotted dog / cat are completely unhelpful because they don’t contain the information needed to reunite / rescue the animal. ![]()
⚡️Post locally (community groups, rescue pages) with facts![]()
🏡 If the dog is safely contained![]()
✔️Check for tags and call the number listed. If there is not a tag, take the animal to the nearest vet or animal control shelter to have it scanned for a microchip.
✔️If someone claims the dog, ask for proof of ownership (photos, vet records, unique markings).
✔️Do not hand a dog over based on a description alone.![]()

❤️ Helping reunite families![]()

🐾 Breed Spotlight: The German Shepherd Dog (GSD)🐾![]()
👑💜Our beautiful German Shepherd Dog, Hope, has been looking for her forever home for going on TWO YEARS! 🏠🏰![]()
At Wilkes Rescue Group, we’ve had the honor of helping many incredible dogs find their forever homes—but there’s something truly special about the German Shepherd Dog. If you know our co-founder, Donna, a rescued GSD is her favorite breed! 💛![]()
These intelligent, loyal and courageous dogs often end up in shelters through no fault of their own. They are working dogs at heart—born to protect, eager to learn, and happiest when they have a purpose. Whether it’s being a family protector, a hiking partner, or simply your best friend, a German Shepherd gives their whole heart to the job.![]()
But they’re not for everyone. GSDs need structure, mental stimulation, and lots of exercise. Without it, they can become anxious or develop other unhealthy behaviors. They’re incredibly smart—which means they learn fast, both the good and the not-so-good. 😉 Training, patience, and consistency are key.![]()
💡 Thinking of adopting a German Shepherd? Make sure you’re ready to commit. If you do, you’ll have a loyal shadow who will love you for life.![]()
